Today I interviewed my mentor, Education Curator Cristina Scorza, everyone calls her Cris. She has been at the Museum for 16 years. She is mainly responsible for managing the interpretation of the Museum's permanent collection and of its current exhibitions. Cris oversees the gallery educators and manages most public programs at the Museum.
She is also in charge of making sure that labels for exhibitions have a proper Spanish translation and that the language is accessible to most audiences.
Cris came to the MCASD after working in New York for some time at the New Museum. She decided to work in the field of education curation because of the impact that it can have. Cris chose MCASD specifically because she had maxed her possibilities in New York, but also because of its proximity to Mexico.
Cris said that her job is "100 percent satisfying." She believes in the importance of making art accessible for everyone.
During the interview Cris also gave me a few hints for working at MCASD and the art world in general. First, stay flexible and open-minded; second, stay informed; and lastly, public relations are very important in the art world. An artist must be ready to talk about themselves and their work.
