Model United Nations
The Model United Nations was a project in which the entire 10th grade participated. We started by learning
about the causes of World War 1 and World War 2, the major events that they consisted of, the roles that certain countries played, and the outcomes and after effects of the wars. I also learned about the League of Nations, an intergovernmental organization created for the purpose of preventing another world war; obviously, they failed. After the fall of the League of Nations, a result of the lack of enforcement of rules and decisions, and the events of World War 2, the United Nations was created. Its purpose to maintain international peace and security, and protect human rights, the United Nations learned from its predecessor.
After we learned a bit about the creation of the U.N. and some world history, we were assigned countries to represent during a Model United Nations conference with the topic being overpopulation. We were required to research the issue in our country and write position policy paper, mine is displayed below. I was assigned to represent Spain. While researching for the conference I learned about things like Spain's main sources of income, imports and exports, natural resources, and history, but I also learned about Spain's under population problem. It was interesting to learn about and made the project much more challenging.
During the conference I learned about the procedures of the United Nations, and the nature of international affairs and cooperation. During the conference I was also able to contribute to the writing of a resolution. Looking back it was rather funny, but my conference didn't know that we could write more than one resolution, so we created one for all the issues we needed to solve, to which I contributed many ideas.
